Parks, Recreation & Tourism Planning

Parks and recreation support multiple benefits in our communities. They define a sense of place, enable healthy lifestyles, protect environmental resources, and promote a feeling of belonging. They are key to sustainability for their cultural and environmental benefits, and for encouraging lifestyles based on alternate modes of transportation. Tourism is often intertwined with parks and recreation planning; tourists use many of the same open spaces and facilities as residents. Tourism benefits communities by enhancing economic vitality.

Planning for parks, recreation and culture requires a holistic approach. We engage with communities to understand current patterns of use, a vision for the future, and the degree to which community values are being addressed. Our plans are integrated, comprehensive and feasible to implement. We have in-depth understanding of the elements of successful park and recreation systems, and of the recreational needs of the public and specific user groups. Our approach is both strategic and detailed.

In tourism planning, we were a core member of the team that developed the method for conducting tourism resource inventories in British Columbia. Since that time, we conducted numerous tourism resource inventories, and tourism opportunity studies. Our approach includes extensive community consultation, comprehensive related research, and clear, useful GIS mapping.
