Somass Estuary Management Plan
Port Alberni, BC
The Somass River Estuary, at the south end of the Alberni Valley, is located at the mouth of the second largest watershed on Vancouver Island. Today, only a small portion of the original delta remains relatively undisturbed. The project involved development of an Estuary Management Plan that includes a vision, objectives, habitat classification, management strategies, area designations, and implementation and monitoring plans. A Steering Committee of agencies and interest groups guided the process. The role of CBA included facilitation of all meetings, GIS mapping, and preparation of the plan document.
