Richmond Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) Inventory Update

City of Richmond, BC

Richmond had an ESA inventory conducted in the mid 1980s. It required revision since it was conducted manually, there was no way to analyze the ESAs, and there were no management strategies included. CBA led a team that updated the ESA inventory using a unique method developed specifically for Richmond. The method includes GIS mapping of the ESA polygons; GPS capture of important environmental features; a comprehensive database description of each ESA; interpretation of the habitat functions, significance, concerns, and enhancement potential; as well as a link to management strategies. The ESA inventory is easy to analyze interactively on computer and involves features such as pop-up photographs of the ESAs.
